DS version 7 will not work on Vista or 7 while DS version 9 will. Most computer manufacturers stopped selling XP unless you pick up refurbished computer (many manufactures offer a standard one year warrenty with refurbs.) As far as ram, video drivers, processor, memory, this depends how many applicaions you run and what they are. The more applications, the more memory and better processor you will need. I suggest a Core2 or an i-series processor if you are running any type of graphics like Corel or Photoshop. Also get at least 256mb video card and at least 2gb of ram. Many newer computers come with 512mb video and 4gb ram so you would be fine. Dell Vostro and Optiplex series are good computers for embroidery and graphics. The Vostro also offers a Vista downgrade to XP package so you won't have to buy the DesignShop 9 upgrade.
